I’m her mummy, so I am bound to be a teeny tiny bit biased, but I think Big M is bloomin’ marvellous.
She is only 27 months old, and in the last nine weeks she has:
- got a new house
- become a big sister
- decided to potty train herself
And she barely batted an eyelid.
And to top it all off, last week she moved into her Big Girl’s Bed.
Until recently my cousins had been using the bunk beds my sister and I used way back when. They are now teenagers and no longer want them. The beds were offered to us and we said “yes please” (they’re good quality beds, despite being twenty something several years old, and it saves us some money. Always a good thing, especially when I’m only getting maternity pay). Big M was very excited about the prospect of getting a big girl’s bed, and we had great fun going to choose some bedding. (Note to shops: not all mummies of little girls want horrific pink duvet sets – you need to find the balance between girly and sick-inducing. Just saying…)
Last week my aunty and cousins came to meet Little M and brought the bunk beds round. In a completely unplanned but unavoidable instance of gender stereotyping (I cannot do heavy lifting and have been banned from using power tools…), my man built the bed and then I made it up with the lovely even if it is pink new bedding.
Big M was unbelievably excited, and had to be bribed to get out of bed to eat her tea.
At bedtime, she sat on the floor ready for stories like normal, and looked at me as if I was mad as I climbed into her bed armed with The Jolly Postman. She thought it was hilarious and soon joined me. And that was that. We left the cot up in her room in case of emergencies (I was aiming not to repeat the trauma that was the move to a duvet) but after a couple of days we took it down. She has fallen out of bed once, but all I had to do was pick her up and pop her back in to bed. She barely even noticed.
As yet she hasn’t discovered that she can open her door (we have put a gate up to prevent midnight wanderings) or that she could climb out of bed when nobody is looking and wreak havoc play with her toys. We’ll deal with that when we have to.
Until then I am just going to marvel at the fact that my little girl takes everything we throw at her in her stride. She’s amazing.

That is great. It took my little one about a week to realise she could open the door and leave the room. We didn't put a gate on so she could run through to us when she got up in the morning. She loves her bed too and I love climbing into bed with her to read her a story – in fact that was the main reason I moved her out of a cot! Glad she has taken to it so well. Well done Big M!

Ironically this very morning she discovered she could open the door *without* even getting out of bed. She was very proud of herself, so am glad we put the gate up. Actually got that tip from you so thanks!

Aww congratulations on the big girl bed! It makes you want to burst when they take such major changes in their stride. When we moved Amy into her big girl bed she commented on her cot being empty. I thought we were in for some regression, when she suggested we have a baby brother and sister to put in it. We'll see.

[...] I remember she is two and a half. She has had a ridiculous amount to cope with over the last few months and maybe her tantrums are in part a reaction to all of that. She is meant [...]
