On Saturday Big M and I baked a cake. We do this quite a lot because we like cake. And also it’s fun to cook together. Because we are such pros nowadays we don’t even look at the recipe book. We are that good.
Big M helps me weigh the ingredients. She’s got the whole “Silly Mummy” sigh down to a tee as I pour too much flour into the bowl every fricking time and have to spoon some back into the bag.
As we weigh all the ingredients we put them into separate bowls ready to mix together. Big M likes to taste all the ingredients individually. “Can I mummy?” she says, her finger already licked. And when I say all the ingredients I mean all. Apart from the eggs. Every time we bake she samples the sugar (ok, that I get), the flour (gah) and the butter (*heave*). I figured after the first couple of times she would discover that the flour and butter weren’t so nice. I figured wrong.
Anyhoo, after she has sampled the ingredients, we set about mixing them together. None of this faffing around creaming sugar and butter, adding eggs slowly. Oh no. We whack it all in and mix it together. Job done. And if I’m not careful, Big M is using her little wooden spoon to shovel the mixture into her mouth.
Once our mixture is ready we spoon it into the tins. Again I have to make sure that the mixture actually makes it to its intended destination and isn’t diverted to Big M’s open mouth. Once it’s in we put it in the oven and tidy up have a cup of tea.
When the cake is cooked and cooled we make the icing. Invariably it is pink (not my choice) but the sprinkles on top change. This week we went with hundreds and thousands.
And then we cut ourselves a slice and enjoy our home baked goodness.
At least, Mr TOPP and I do. Big M has never, ever, eaten any of the cakes we have made together. Instead, she has her slice and licks the icing clean off.
Turns out she loves cake, but only before it’s actually cake.
It is her birthday next month. She wants a Peppa Pig cake, which Mr TOPP has grand ideas that we will make ourselves (?!). We have told her that if she doesn’t eat the cake as well as the icing then she can’t have a birthday cake. Big M is now officially in Cake Training.
She has, if you will, got to learn to have her cake AND eat it.

Yay for cake! And I'd probably eat her cake too – so long as she isn't venomous? *just checking*
We call Tori 'Cake' more than Tori sometimes, though that's just because Daddy accused me of eating too much cake when I first started showing (we didn't know I was pregnant at the time) and it sort of stuck all the way through the pregnancy and beyond. Poor child doesn't really stand a chance….

I may or may not have eaten food rejected by big m in the past, and so far have not been poisoned. I can't understand her dislike of cake. She definitely doesn't take after me in that respect

my son is the same, we make the biscuits/cake, he is super keen, then nibbles at the finished article and rejects it. This the same for any cooking he takes part in. Look forward to seeing the results of the Pepper pig cake!

I have to admit that sometimes I think the cake batter tastes better than the actual cake! I always eat it though
