In 2005 I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and put on various medication to help me control flare ups. My mum sorted a food allergy test to try and help me better control my symptoms, and it was through that that I discovered that I am lactose intolerant.

I immediately cut out all dairy and felt a gazillion times better.

Yes, it made going food shopping quite depressing, and going out for dinner was a bit of a minefield.

But I found alternatives to most things. And friends and family all completely rose to the challenge.


The other week Mr TOPP was in America at a conference and apparently the conversation got around to food intolerances. One of his colleagues told him about some tablets that can help people like me eat dairy again.


Anyhoo, on Saturday I tracked down some lactase tablets. Part of me was dubious. Part of me was screaming “BRIE! DAIRY MILK! GARLIC BREAD!” Guess which part of me won?


Three of these bad boys before dairy laden food should apparently do the trick.

That evening the kids had pizza for tea. I may or may not have had a couple of slices.

Not wanting to overload my body with dairy until I am sure it’s all cool, I decided to ease myself in gently.

Who am I kidding?

In the last 48 hours I have eaten pizza, custard, apple pie and a scone.

It’s like a minor miracle. My life has been revolutionised. I can now eat a cake in a cafe, garlic bread, BRIE!!

The possibilities are endless.

If you need me I’ll be eating my body weight in chocolate.
